Two individuals from Canada have been apprehended and charged with fraud, accused of deceiving investors in a cryptocurrency and foreign exchange investment scheme, purportedly amassing approximately $40 million CAD, equivalent to roughly $30 million USD.

Aiden Pleterski, self-styled as the “Crypto King” and aged 25, faces charges of fraud and money laundering in connection with the alleged Ponzi scheme. His associate, 27-year-old Colin Murphy, has been charged with fraud, as announced by the Ontario Securities Commission on Wednesday.

These criminal charges follow a 16-month investigation, dubbed Project Swan, undertaken by Canadian authorities. The investigation coincides with an ongoing bankruptcy case linked to the purported scheme, which has garnered significant media attention in Canada.

According to court documents and local media reports, between 2021 and 2022, approximately 160 investors entrusted Pleterski and his company, AP Private Equity Limited, with around $40 million in Canadian dollars ($30 million USD) for investment in the cryptocurrency and foreign exchange markets. Some investors reportedly secured loans to invest with Pleterski.

The trustee overseeing the bankruptcy case concluded that Pleterski only invested a mere 2% of the funds received, while allegedly splurging at least $16 million on personal luxuries, including the acquisition of over 10 luxury cars, international travel, and renting an $8.4 million lakefront mansion for $45,000 per month. Notably, two McLarens, two BMWs, and a Lamborghini were seized during the bankruptcy proceedings.

Pleterski, also known for his minor livestreaming endeavors, documented his lavish lifestyle in various online videos, showcasing extravagant vacations, driving rented luxury cars, and detailing his lavish expenditures. His spending included an estimated $150,000 on Lego sets since 2021.

During the bankruptcy proceedings, Pleterski purportedly portrayed himself as disorganized and lacking financial record-keeping, referring to himself as a “20-something-year-old kid.”

In December 2022, Pleterski allegedly became a victim of kidnapping, purportedly abducted, assaulted, and tortured for three days by five individuals claiming to be victims of his Ponzi scheme. Four alleged perpetrators have since been arrested and charged with kidnapping.

Following his release, a video surfaced showing Pleterski, visibly bruised and swollen, issuing apologies to investors—a video his lawyer later asserted was coerced. Notably, NBA player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander filed suit to back out of purchasing the aforementioned mansion after learning of its connection to Pleterski.

Pleterski was released on $100,000 bail, with his parents signing as sureties. His bail conditions include surrendering his passport, refraining from discussing financial matters on social media, and abstaining from crypto trading or purchases. The Ontario Securities Commission has indicated further updates will be provided on Thursday.

Investigations reveal that investor funds totaling $30 million were purportedly misappropriated, leading to extravagant expenditures such as the acquisition of 10 luxury cars and the rental of a lavish mansion in Canada for a staggering $45,000 per month. These funds were allegedly utilized to sustain a luxurious lifestyle enjoyed by the individuals accused of perpetrating the fraud.

Following the arrest, the accused individual, aged 25, was granted bail on Tuesday. The bail amount was set at $100 million, with his parents acting as sureties. As a condition of his bail, he is required to abstain from engaging in any activities on social media related to the buying and selling of cryptocurrency ideas. Additionally, he must surrender his passport, restricting his ability to travel.

The unfolding investigation sheds light on the purported misuse of investor funds, prompting legal actions against those allegedly responsible for the fraudulent scheme.

Two individuals from Ontario, including the self-proclaimed “Crypto King” Aiden Pleterski, aged 25, and his associate Colin Murphy, aged 27, have been arrested and charged with fraud.

Pleterski faces charges of fraud over $5,000 and money laundering, as per information from the Oshawa courthouse. He was released on bail on Tuesday, with his parents acting as sureties for a $100,000 bond to ensure compliance with his bail conditions, which include surrendering his passport, refraining from contacting investors, abstaining from social media posts related to financial matters, and avoiding crypto trading or purchases.

Murphy, on the other hand, has been charged with fraud over $5,000, according to the Durham Regional Police.

The arrests follow a 16-month investigation dubbed Project Swan, initiated by Canadian authorities. The probe was prompted by numerous complaints received by Durham police in July 2022, alleging investment fraud involving Pleterski. During the investigation, Murphy emerged as a figure who allegedly claimed to generate substantial weekly profits through savvy investments, leading some victims to entrust him with funds under similar circumstances to Pleterski.

Pleterski’s activities have been under scrutiny since the summer of 2022, when he was forced into bankruptcy by aggrieved investors. Over the course of the investigation, it was revealed that Pleterski allegedly invested only a small fraction of the funds he received while indulging in lavish personal expenditures, including renting private jets, luxury vacations, acquiring multiple high-end vehicles, and leasing an upscale mansion.

Despite facing bankruptcy, Pleterski continued to flaunt a luxurious lifestyle, embarking on international trips and presenting himself as a professional streamer. However, his ostentatious displays attracted attention and scrutiny, leading to ongoing investigations and legal actions.

Murphy, meanwhile, faced legal consequences earlier this year for contempt of court in a lawsuit related to investment recovery efforts. He was sentenced to five months in jail for failing to surrender his iPhone during a court-authorized search and subsequently deleting data from the device. Following his release from jail pending an appeal, Murphy was ordered to pay damages to the investor involved in the case.

As the investigation unfolds, both the Durham Regional Police Service and the Ontario Securities Commission are expected to provide further updates during a news conference in Whitby, Ontario, on Thursday.
